The greatest challenge of this project was preserving the vaulted ceilings while complying with the requirements of the preservation order. Acoustic optimization had to be achieved without altering the overall appearance of the space, and the new acoustic ceiling systems were designed to reflect the original form of both the cross vault and the barrel vault. Implementing acoustic solutions in a listed historic building is seen as a responsibility: to provide a level of comfort that was not possible at the time of construction, while protecting the architectural value of the structure. Accordingly, all measures focused exclusively on improving acoustics, while maintaining the original aesthetics.

Thanks to the system’s ability to adapt to a wide variety of forms, discreet solutions were developed to integrate seamlessly with the architectural details of the building. Wall connections and vault junctions were completed in a way that preserved the authentic character of the monastery. The acoustic panels were cut to match the shape of the vaulted ceilings, and the BASWA Phon Classic Top system was selected to ensure a perfect fit with the original plaster surfaces. The panels were mechanically fastened for additional stability, and at the wall junctions they were tapered and finished with joint filler.

In the case of the cross vault ceilings, the ridges had to be constructed without the use of profiles in order to remain faithful to the original building method. For this purpose, the panels were bevelled on both sides. To replicate the character of the old plaster ceilings, the surface was intentionally not finished to a completely smooth level; visible surface waves were not only accepted but also desired, as they enhanced the historical authenticity of the space. In this way, the original construction method was respected while achieving acoustic improvement.

As a result, the BASWA Phon acoustic ceiling systems now provide high-performance sound absorption, allowing the spaces to serve their current purposes perfectly. With the historic fabric preserved, both speech intelligibility and acoustic comfort have been significantly enhanced, making the rooms ideal for versatile use.
